Frequently Asked Questions
How does a fire hose work?
The intake hose is designed to connect a fire department’s pumper to a portable pump or another water source. There are two types of intake hoses: the hard suction hose, and the soft sleeve hose. The hard suction hose works to draft water from below the pump, which prevents collapsing under vacuum conditions.
What is the average size of a fire hose?
There are three standard sizes of fire hoses 1½, 1¾ and 2½ inches. Depending on the size and severity of the fire, hose line requirements vary. Selecting the incorrect one can cause delays in fire suppression and exhaustion.
How much pressure is in a fire hose?
Generally, each fire department determines what it considers to be a manageable hoseline; some may consider it a hoseline with a pump pressure of 160 psi or less while another may be comfortable with 185 psi or less. Each of these characteristics will impact the effective working length of the hoseline. This is the same for fire hoses and fire pipes used in the industrial and commercial sectors.
Why are fire hoses flat?
Most fire hoses are designed to be stored flat to minimise the space required for storage.
